What is a “plus one?”  It’s when you invite someone to your wedding who is likely to bring a date or partner. Since head counts are important for calculating your budget, renting seating, and planning food, you want to make sure you know how man of these plus ones you should be accounting for. Here are some general guidelines for people who need and don’t need a plus one, so can plan accordingly for your wedding and reception.

1.  Who Needs a Plus One?

  • Maybe you only know the woman in a couple, but she’s married. For that guest, you should count a plus one for her husband. Also, anyone who’d engaged, living with a partner, or in a serious relationship should be allowed a plus one.
  • Anyone who’s part of your wedding party, like bridesmaids, groomsmen, or a divorced or widowed parent, should really be extended a plus one so they can have the option of bringing someone if they would like.
  • Any important guests….such as your best friend who lives 500 miles away…is a good plus one option as well. Their VIP status means they should be able to bring someone with them, since you probably will be too busy to spend a lot of time with them on your wedding day.
  • Remember: Anyone who is allowed a plus one should be told in their invitation that they are allowed to bring a guest. RSVPs will be essential, however!
