One of the biggest choices and tasks associated with your wedding day is your invitations. Once you’ve chosen your invitations and put together your guest list, it will be time to start addressing them so you can mail them in plenty of time. If you’re unsure how to address the outer envelopes of your invitations to different types of guests, here’s a basic guide.
1. For Married Couples
Heterosexual married couples can be addressed the following ways if they have the same last name:
- Mr. Jon and Mrs. Mary Smith
- Mr. and Mrs. Jon Smith
If they have different last names, use:
- Mr. Jon Smith and Mrs. Mary Jones
For same-sex couples, you can use the same rules whether they are married or unmarried:
- Ms. Mary Smith and Ms. Jackie Post
- Jon Smith and Mark Evans
For a married female doctor or two doctors who are married:
- Dr. Mary Smith and Mr. Jon Baker (if she uses her maiden name professionally and socially)
- Dr. Mary and Mr. Jon Baker (if she uses her married name socially)
- Doctors Mary and Jon Baker (if they are both doctors)
- Doctors Mary Smith and Jon Baker (if they are both doctors and she uses her maiden name)
