Before getting engaged, you certainly get to know your fiancé well. You probably talk about everything and know each other’s little idiosyncrasies — at least some of them. 😉 You’ve likely discussed where to live, whether to have a family, and what your career goals might be. But how much have you discussed finances? It’s not a ton of fun to talk about this stuff, but it’s really important to get both of you on the same financial page before tying the knot. Here are some of the financial topics you should be talking about.
1. Prenuptial Agreement
A lot of couples view this as taboo…as if they’re setting themselves up for failure if they consider a prenuptial agreement. But the truth is, 2 of every 5 first-time marriages (about 45%) do end in divorce. Bridge the topic, talk about it, and decide what’s best for both of you, then get it done and out of the way if you decide to go for one. Hopefully, you’ll never need to talk about it again.
