After the excitement of your wedding, reality begins to creep in on you. Part of that reality is the task of changing your last name, if you decide to do so. Since it won’t automatically, legally change when you get married, here are 7 things you’ll need to know when making the transition.
1. It Takes Time
Changing your last name requires going through a good amount of red tape to prove your identity and make everything legal. With your bank or other businesses, usually all you need to do is inform them of the change. However, other institutions will require documentation: certified birth certificates, Social Security cards (not just the number), your marriage certificate, etc. Before the wedding, make sure you know what the process is and gather the right documents.
